El idioma inglés y su calado en España

¿DU YU ESPIC INGLISH?

Las insignias ya no lo son, pins, las comidas frías lunchs y los repartos de cine castings, este país no es lo mismo: ahora es mucho, muchísimo más moderno. Hubo un tiempo en en el que los niños leían tebeos en vez de comics, los empresarios hacían negocios y no business, y los obreros sacaban la fiambrera al mediodía en vez del tupper-ware.

En el colegio antes se hacía gimnasia y al parecer estábamos equivocados porque lo que hacíamos en realidad era aerobic. Hoy día si no manejas al menos 100 palabras en inglés no eres nadie, y es que las cosas en otro idioma suenan mejor. Porque no es lo mismo decir bacon que panceta, aunque tenga la misma grasa, ni vestíbulo que hall, ni inconveniente que handicap.

Ya no decimos en España bizcocho sino plum-cake, ni tenemos sentimientos sino feelings. Sacamos tickets, compramos compacts, comemos sandwiches, vamos al pub, practicamos rappel, raffting, paddle y en lugar de acampar los españoles hacen camping.

Esos cambios de lenguaje han influido en nuestras costumbres y han mejorado nuestro aspecto. Y es que las mujeres ya no usan medias sino panties y los hombres no utilizan calzoncillos sino slips o boxers, y después de afeitarse se echan after shave, que deja la cara mucho más fresca que el tónico. El ciudadano español ya no corre, porque correr es de cobardes, hace jogging, no estudia pero hace masters y nunca consigue aparcar por eso mete el coche en un parking.

El mercado ahora es el marketing, el autoservicio el self-service, el escalafón el ranking y el representante el manager. Los importantes son VIPS, los auricularres son ipods, los ejecutivos yuppies, y hasta nannies. En la oficina el jefe está siempre en meetings o brainstorming, siempre con la public-relations, mientras la assistant envía mailings y organiza trainings. Luego irá al gym y se encontrará con todas las de la jet que vienen a hacerse liftings y con alguna top-model amante del body-fitness, del spinning o del body-combat.

El antiguo aperitivo ha dado paso a los cocktails, donde se bebe bitter y se come roast-beef, que aunque parezca los mismo, engorda mucho menos que la carne. Los periodistas trabajan en un magazine, los artistas en la tele van al show y si ese show es heavy es que contiene carnaza y si es reality la audiencia se dispara. Entre medias ya no ponen anuncios sino spots que te obligan, no a cambiar de canal, sino a hacer zapping.
Estas cosas enriquecen mucho. Para ser ricos del todo y quitarnos el complejo de tercermundista que tuvimos en otros tiempos, solo nos queda decir con acento americano, de las pocas palabras que el español ha exportado al mundo, la palabra SIESTA.

Competition (Grab & Learn), Desafío (Arrastra y Aprende)

COMPETITION GRAB & LEARN

The new competition ‘Grab and Learn’ is a vocabulary-based game found in the Learning Resources section of our website. The competition is going to be run between the 15th of December 2011 and the 15th of January 2012 .
In total there are 5 parts to the competition; Food Supplies, Sinking Ship, Animals in Danger, Aliens in School and Household Trouble. Each game has three different difficulties: easy, normal and hard. To complete a level avoid the sharks, aliens and other weird creatures trying to eat you. On completion of each level you will obtain a ‘secret word’. The winner of the competition will be the person that successfully obtains all 15 secret words and sends them to us within said time period.
In the event of no one completing all 15 levels the winner will be the person with the most correct words, giving heavier weighting to words from more difficult levels. If two or more people are tied at the top they will be forwarded onto a lucky draw to decide an outright winner. We wish you the best of luck!! (Not sure how to play? DESAFÍO ARRASTRA Y APRENDE

La nueva competición de ISLA consiste en “arrastrar y aprender” y se basa prácticamente en un juego de vocabulario que puedes encontrar en la sección Learning Resources de la página web de ISLA. La competición estará activa desde el 15 de diciembre hasta el 15 de enero de 2012.

La competición se divide en 5 partes; FOOD SUPPLIES, SINKING SHIP, ANIMALS IN DANGER, ALIENS IN SCHOOL, HOUSEHOLD TROUBLE.

Cada juego tiene tres niveles de dificultad: fácil, normal y difícil. Para poder completar un nivel, debes evitar a los tiburones, alienígenas y otras criaturas extrañas que intentarán devorarte. Al finalizar cada nivel obtendrás una palabra secreta. El vencedor de la competición será el que obtenga con éxito las 15 palabras secretas y las envíe a ISLA dentro del plazo establecido.

En el caso de que ningún participante obtenga las 15 palabras secretas, el vencedor será aquel que obtenga un mayor número de palabras correctas, dando mayor importancia a las palabras que tengan más dificultad. En el supuesto caso que dos competidores tuvieran el mismo número de aciertos, el vencedor será elegido por sorteo.

Chocolates con Churro – Amanda’s Bête Noire

“Careful you don’t burn the chocolate” said Sara from the office and I gave her one of my little smiles. Should I gently remind her about my legendary culinary skills? No, perhaps I’ll just surprise her with a delicious cup of thick dark chocolate with a hint of red chili. He ho, thought I, that’ll show her.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Something is smelling a bit singed. It’s bubbling away quite cheerily, but what’s all that thick black smoke? Scrape scrape went the spoon on the bottom of the pot. ”You’ve burn it ” smirked Corbyn the runner winning himself a spank.

Another day, another dollop of chocolate. Slowly, slowly – how difficult can this be? ”Don’t burn the chocolate” said Dieter and I assured him I’d refined my technique. And I had, I had – it was ready, dark velvet smooth chocolatey deliciousness ready to be heated up for the next day’s event.

When it got burnt. Again.

IT ONLY HAD TO BE HEATED UP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!

Corybn got quite huffy and said he wasn’t going to help any more if I kept screwing things up. But he nicely tried to cover up for me by fibbing to Dieter about it being burned. Which didn’t work as the whole Txoko was thick with smoke and choking Italians.

They ate all the churros though.

Chocolate con churros

…Y de repente Sara dijo, “eh, cuidado no quemes el chocolate…” su voz provenía de la oficina y no pude por menos que dibujar una sonrisa en mi rostro. Quizá debería, con todos los respetos, recordar a Sara, mis aptitudes culinarias. O, quizá, debería sorprenderla con un delicioso chocolate negro, espeso y con una pizca de picante. Y pensé, exacto, eso es lo que haré.

Oh querida, querida, querida. Huele un poco a quemado. Eso ya hierve alegremente, pero, ¿y todo ese humo negro y espeso, de dónde proviene? Anda raspa con la cuchara en el fondo de la perola. “Lo has quemado”, dijo Corbyn soltando una sonrisita irónica y golpeando su propio trasero.

Un día más, oootra cucharadita de chocolate. Despacito, despacito… es increíble lo difícil que puede llegar a ser esto. “No quemes el chocolate”, dijo Dieter y yo le aseguré que depuraría mi técnica. Y lo hice, vaya que si lo hice, estaba preparado, ese suave y aterciopelado chocolate, delicioso y preparado para ser calentado para el próximo acontecimiento.

SOLO TENÍA QUE CALENTARSE UN POCO PARA GRITAR A PLENO PULMÓN.

Corbyn se enfadó ligeramente y dijo que no pensaba ayudar más si yo seguía fastidiando las cosas. Aunque cortésmente trato de taparme diciéndole a Dieter una mentirijilla sobre que se hubiera quemado el chocolate, aunque a decir verdad, no funcionó mucho porque el Txoko estaba lleno de un humo espeso que dejaba claro qué había pasado allí.

En cualquier caso, todos comieron churros.

First Victory for our Football Team

With a leaping heart and a heavy hangover I bring you joyous news of Atheletic Akelarre’s latest game.

We always knew it would be a blood match between two titans fighting it out to, er, win their first game of the season (in both cases) and not be bottom of the league.

And so it was as our boys kept us on knife’s edge with Pablo scoring the first goal followed by a penalty for Aldelengua’s Ivan. Off to the changing rooms for half time, rousing talk and once agin out to the battlefield.

But who is this we see thundering down the pitch to score? Carlos, good man. 2:1 And there he is again, streaking down the field like a red and white striped gazelle. GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

Triumphant from having scored more goals in one game than in the rest of the season , for not ending up with 4 players in hospital and, by jove, for having won their game, our boys retired to Bar Akelarre to partake in a sport they are true cracks at: celebrating. The clinking of pints cheering, the shouted re-living that pass in the 33rd minute, teary speeches of thanks to Iker and Dieter, then teary thanks from them on being presented with a signed poster of their team to treasure forever. A full 12 hours after the game was over the party was still roaring.

Let’s just hope those sneaky people at Barca don’t try and get their hands on our Carlos….

Crónica de una victoria

Con el corazón en un puño y una resaca considerable, me congratulo en traeros una jubilosa noticia, y es la crónica del último partido del Athletic Akelarre. Siempre supimos que sería un partido “a muerte” entre dos titanes que luchaban por hacerse con la primera victoria de la temporada, para evitar quedarse en lo más bajo de la clasificación.

Y así fue; nuestros chicos nos mantuvieron en el filo de la navaja hasta que Pablo marcó el primer gol, seguido de un penalti causado por Iván, del Aldealengua. En el descanso, los soldados fueron arengados y de nuevo regresaron al campo de batalla.

Pero, ¿qué ven mis ojos?, Un rayo haciendo diabluras con el balón para modificar el marcador, sí era nuestro “hombre”, Carlos. De modo que allá vamos, recorriendo el campo como una auténtica gacela rojiblanca, y por supuesto, GOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!

Exultantes por haber anotado más goles en un partido que durante toda la temporada, contentos por no acabar con 4 jugadores en el hospital, por haber ganado el partido, nuestros chicos se retiraron al Bar Akelarre, que como ya hemos dicho, son auténticos fuera de serie cuando se trata de ¡CELEBRAR! El sonido de las jarras de cerveza al brindar, las vibraciones al recordar el fantástico pase que en el minuto 33 dio el gol, los emotivos discursos de agradecimiento a Iker y a Dieter, infinitas muestras de cariño como por ejemplo, el gran póster firmado por el equipo, que pasará a los anales de la historia del Athletic Akelarre. 12 horas después del partido la fiesta seguía en su máximo esplendor.

Ahora, cuidémonos de que el Barça no ponga sus manos en nuestro hombre, en Carlos…

Nochevieja Universitaria en Salamanca

La tradición española tiene por costumbre darle especial importancia a dos eventos que tienen lugar en época navideña, una es “nochebuena” y otra es “nochevieja”. La primera es más familiar y nostálgica; la segunda invita más a la diversión, a la reunión de amigos. Durante la nochebuena o “cena del 24”, se recuerda a seres queridos ya desaparecidos, durante la nochevieja o “cena del 31” uno se congratula por haber sido capaz de “sobrevivir” un año más. Las últimas campanadas del año se despiden con 12 uvas, que armónicamente uno se introduce en la boca para digerirlas al son del tañer de la campana.

En este contexto sociocultural surge la nochevieja universitaria; como iniciativa de un grupo de estudiantes que consideraron importante despedir el año, durante periodo lectivo universitario, eligiendo el último jueves antes de las vacaciones navideñas. Así, estudiantes y compañeros podrían decir adiós al año en curso, antes de regresar a sus localidades de origen. Sonaba fantástico, la verdad. La iniciativa tuvo una respuesta desbordante en cuanto a número de participantes y donde hosteleros y empresarios vieron una fuente extra de ingresos. Como recurso original y singular, los organizadores decidieron que las uvas tradicionales fueran sustituidas por 12 gominolas, de modo que en sucesivas convocatorias los organizadores ya repartían un “kit completo” en el que se incluyen los doce motivos de despedida, o sea las gominolas, un gorro de Papá Noel con su correspondiente antifaz, símbolo distintivo de los más mediocres bailes de “fin de año”; el evento fue creciendo y gracias al “boca-boca” y a las nuevas tecnologías virtuales, la noticia fue pasando de ciudad en ciudad, reuniéndose en la Plaza Mayor de Salamanca en la última convocatoria, la nada despreciable cantidad de 30.000 estudiantes.

Con autobuses fletados y una profesional convocatoria, venta de participaciones por internet y un “site” dedicado exclusivamente a esta peculiar fiesta (www.nocheviejauniversitaria.com), la iniciativa crece cada más y más cada año.

Ahora incluso el apoyo de los medios audiovisuales sirve para retrasmitir el espectáculo por T.V. e incluso por internet. Si quieres vivir algo diferente y te apetece despedir el año “fuera de fecha”, esta es tu fiesta. Date prisa pues los autocares y coches de línea estarán colapsados. Ahhh y recuerda, nada de vidrio ni alcohol en la Plaza Mayor.

Spanish tradition dictates the celebration of two major dates in the Christmas calendar: “nochebuena” and “nochevieja”. The first of these is a tender family day; the second a whooping party with one’s chums. On nochebuena or the “dinner of the 24th”, families remember the dearly departed, while on nochevieha or the “dinner of the 31st” the tone of self congratulation on having survived another year. The final 12 dongs marking the end of the last hour of the last day of the year are matched with the eating of 12 grapes, one on each dong.

And so, the “nochevieja universitaria”, dreamed up by a group of university students who considered it important to say goodbye to the year while they were all still up, on the Thursday before the end of the Michaelmas term. What a great idea. Numbers of participants were overwhelming and local bar owners rubbed their hands in glee at the boom in business. In a witty twist, the traditional grapes were replaced by haribos which are handed out in little kit bags also containing a Father Christmas hat and beard.

And by word of mouth and social media the events’s gone pretty viral with last year’s head count reaching the well respectable number over 30,000 people.

Things have gone pretty pro with a dedicated website selling vouchers (www.nocheviejauniversitaria.com)and fleets of coaches spiriting out of town revelers to Salamanca for the festivities which every year just keep growing bigger.

The event will be on TV and all over the web but if you’re thing is a New Year’s party not on New Year hurry hurry and book your place as the coaches are already chock-a-block. But do remember now, no alcohol or bottles in the Plaza please.

Athletic Club Akelarre

The football team which proudly sports red- and white stripes and theISLA-Logo is named after the first league club Athletic Bilbao and the bar Akelarre which is the team’s HQ. At “Akelarre” strategic manoeuvres and ball tricks are discussed and rehearsed with the help of refreshment!

As one of the 20 Salamanca teams that play in the regional league, Athletic Club Akelarre has an impressive club record: in the last 11 games the team has won an astounding 0 times and has succeeded in scoring 8 goals altogether (let’s not mention the 71 that their opponents have managed to score against them). The team’s spirit, enthusiasm and dedication is so amazing that not even the losses get them down and each player continually pushes himself so that maybe one day they will beat another team.

That is not the only aspect that makes this team unique it is also their large fan base who passionately follow every move during the game and at times are so gripped by the action that they become coaches themselves and start arguing with the players, making the actual team coach a mere spectator. One day the poor old coach got so fed up he stomped off to the locker room, put on a team shirt and ran back onto the field to (try to) score goals!

A highlight of every game are the cocktails and other surprises that are offered to the audience before and during the game which somehow the players also manage to participate in…After each game the celebrations continue in the team’s training bar, Akelarre, the only appropriate ending to a hard day of football!

All in all, Athletic Club Akelarre doesn’t play for glory and fame it plays for the sheer fun of football, friends and feeding their faces! The club may not have star players like Messi or Ronaldo but they are world class when it comes to celebrating!

ISLA PATROCINA A SU EQUIPO DE FÚTBOL

Este equipo de fútbol, cuyo nombre responde a Athletic Akelarre, exhibe con gran orgullo el logotipo de (academia) ISLA, con rayas blancas y rojas, emulando al Athletic de Bilbao que juega en primera división de la LIGA DE FUTBOL PROFESIONAL. La sede deportiva del club se encuentra en el bar Akelarre, donde se discuten nuevas estrategias, trucos y técnicas deportivas y todo ello con la ayuda del correspondiente “refresco”.

Athletic Akelarre pertenece a la LIGA REGIONAL junto con otros 20 equipos y sus marcas son impresionantes: de los últimos 11 encuentros, el equipo ha ganado la nada despreciable cantidad de cero partidos y ha conseguido franquear la meta del oponente en 8 ocasiones (por no mencionar los 71 goles que han encajado). El “espíritu de equipo”, la dedicación y entusiasmo es tan asombroso que las derrotas, no sólo no hacen mella en la moral de los jugadores sino que todo ello sirve para reafirmar su motivación con la esperanza de que algún día derrotarán a algún equipo.

Este no es el único aspecto que hace de este equipo algo “grande”, su seguidores que apasionadamente los apoyan durante cada uno de los partidos, llegan a convertirse en entrenadores, haciendo del auténtico entrenador un mero espectador. Hubo un día incluso en el que el pobre entrenador, harto de esa situación, irrumpió en el vestuario, se calzó una camiseta del Athletic Akelarre y regresó al terreno de juego con la intención de meter un gol.

Digno de mención es el cocktail y otras sorpresas que en cada partido se ofrece al público, de lo que se hace partícipe también a los propios jugadores. Después de cada encuentro la fiesta continúa en el bar Akelarre, sede del equipo, un final oportuno para un día de duro deporte.

Parece claro que el Athletic Akelarre no juega por fama o gloria sino por “amor al arte”, diversión y amistad. Puede que el equipo no tenga grandes estrellas como Messi o Cristiano pero son auténticos “primera clase” a la hora de divertirse.

22nd October: Day on the Green. An indie music festival with 12 hours of music in 2 different spaces: Dorian, Lori Meyers, Dj Amable, Wagon Cooking, Lex Makoto

18th November: Amaral, the Zaragozan songbirds, introduce their latest record “Hacia lo salvaje”. This concert is part of their 30-city Spanish tour.

24th November: Rafael Amargo with his Flamenco Show “Solo and Amargo”, accompanied by Juan Parilla on the flute plus the drum boc, electronic celo, guitar, acordeon, piano and 2 cantaores (singers).

3rd December: The mythical rock group Marea presents their new album “En mi hambre mando yo” in the Multiusos Sánchez Paraiso.

10th December: Loquillo, one of Spain’s most important and consolidated rock musicians visits Salamanca with his Rock and Roll Star playing all the greatest hits from his 30 year career.

27th January: Famous singer Enrique Bunbury (previously of Heroes del Silencio) presents his new album “Licenciado Cantinas”.

Literary Walking tours of Salamanca (Paseos literarios por la ciudad)

As part of our Culture sessions we did two literary city walks; the first was to the statue of Carmen Martín Gaite where we read a fragment of her book “El cuarto de atrás” (The Room at the Back) which is about memory. We also visited the statue of Miguel de Unamuno and learnt about the concept of “intrahistoria” which he pioneered in his essay “En torno al casticismo” (On Purity).
On our second walk we went down to the Roman Bridge to visit the statue of Lazarillo de Tormes and read an adapted synopsis of this book. Some of us put our heads against the statue of the bull to see if, as the Blind Man of the book claimed, you could hear things….

En la clase de Cultura, hicimos dos paseos literarios por la ciudad; en el primero visitamos la estatua de Carmen Martín Gaite y leímos un pequeño fragmento de su obra “El cuarto de atrás”, en el que se habla de la memoria.

En este mismo paseo también visitamos la estatua de Miguel de Unamuno y explicamos el concepto de “intrahistoria” que él acuñó en su ensayo “En torno al casticismo”.

Y, en el segundo paseo literario, nos acercamos al Puente Romano para ver la estatua del Lazarillo y leer el primer capítulo (resumido y adaptado) del libro… Algunos, incluso, pusieron su oído en la estatua del toro a ver si, como decía el ciego en el libro, se oía algo…..
